Cultivo una rosa blanca
José Martí’s beautiful words made history when offered to the Cuban people by President Obama in Havana this spring. The recent steps in re-establishing diplomatic relations since December 17, 2014, have been exciting, encouraging, and emotional.
It inspired us to start the CubaOne Foundation, a non-profit seeking to foster, encourage, and promote dialogue and cooperation between the United States and Cuba by offering a new generation of Cuban Americans the opportunity to interact with the Cuban people and experience Cuba through high-impact, curated trips.
We’ve planted the seed. Now, we ask you to help us grow our rosa blanca.
The first 90 people who donate $1,000 or more will receive recognition on a wall plaque, our website, social media, and related press as being inaugural supporters, receive a set of postcards by Cuban American photographer and Tu Cuba alumni, Steven Garcia, and will be invited to an exclusive event in Miami.
Your gift at any level helps CubaOne make it possible for us to continue to offer a new generation of Cuban Americans the opportunity to give back to Cuba, build relationships with the Cuban people, and explore their heritage through high-impact trips to the island.

The first time I went to Cuba was in 1999. I was eleven years old; almost the same age my father was when he left Havana in 1960. I remember digging through old family photos of my Abuela and Abuelo, a black and white snap shot of them on a motorcycle-they were a part of the Harley Davidson motorcycle club-getting a glimpse of this other life they lived. My dad told me stories about his childhood in Matanzas, his parents ran a rubber factory that made soles for shoes and his aunt ran a box-making factory that made the shoeboxes. He and his cousin would sit on the wall outside their house facing the sea and watch the cars passing by-to this day my dad can tell you the exact year and make of any car.
My dad returned to Cuba for the first time in 1997, I remember his emotional phone calls to my mom where they would talk for hours as he rediscovered his past. Afterwards our house was filled with Cuban music and food as his love for the country he once called home was reignited.
I returned to Cuba for the first time as an adult in 2014. As I prepared I was hesitant, not sure what to expect. How much had the island changed? More importantly, how much had I changed? One night I went dancing in Baracoa, my dad insisting on chaperoning, two young girls asked where I was from. They said they knew I was Cuban because of the way I danced, it was in my blood, I just needed to practice.
Days after returning from my visit, President Obama announced that the US would engage in diplomatic relations with Cuba. This was momentous.
This momentum propelled the CubaOne Foundation into existence-as second generation Cuban Americans it’s our responsibility to chart the way forward. Join me in realizing these bridges, engaging the next generation, and building a better future.
